At the centre of Western Europe and as headquarters to many important international organizations, Belgium has long been thought of as a hub of politics, administration and business.  In recent years, however, the truly cosmopolitan nature of Belgium's big cities (Brussles, Bruges, Antwerp, Charleroi) as well as the international quality cuisine and shopping that is on offer has increased the number of tourists visiting the country.  With ferry connections from the United Kingdom (Hull and Rosyth to Zeebrugge and Ramsgate to Oostende) and three international airports (Brussels-Zaventem Airport, Charleroi Airport and Antwerp Duerne Airport), as well as high-speed train connections to the major cities, there has never been a more convenient time to visit one of Europe's best kept secrets.

Although small when compared to its neighbours France and Germany, Belgium has a population of over ten million and is one of the most built-up countries in Europe.  Having had long and rich histories, the cities of Brussels, Antwerp and Bruges have many sights to interest tourists.  Brussels is famed for being the headquarters of the European Union, as well as being home to Grote Markt (the Grand Place), the Royal Palace and many other stunning pieces of architecture.  Antwerp is regarded as being the world's diamond capital and its famous cathedral, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekathedral, is breathtaking.  Bruges, meanwhile, is one of the most important historical cities in Europe and it's entire city centre is UNESCO World Heritage Listed.  Bruges and Brussels are connected by the E40 Motorway, Brussels and Antwerp by the E19.  It is recommended that you rent a car for your stay in Belgium so that you can fully appreciate the country - just remember, it can be particularly cold in winter so be sure to hire a car with heating!
